For a young family recently transplanted to New Canaan, Connecticut, I designed a house filled with spirited interiors carefully conceived for family living and entertaining. The decision to forfeit a formal dining room in lieu of a large family room provided the opportunity to organize the living room with seating groups suitable to all manner of entertaining. To bring the outdoors in, I stenciled the walls with a pattern abstracted from the shapes of the trees visible through the windows.
